The Ambo Dance Theatre

School

At the Ambo Dance Theatre School, we provide dance classes that are not just focused on dancing, but dance education! It's a more holistic approach to movement, one that doesn't just translate to the stage, but sustains a child's mental and physical wellbeing, their cognitive, social, and gross motor development, and, ultimately, any classroom, career path, or life pursuit they may endeavor!

Every class at Ambo includes the following:

Warmup / Introduction to Class
Mental Wellness Exercises
Historical Information / Connections
Creative Movement Dance Skills
Stretching
Strengthening / Conditioning
Technical Skills
Combinations / Choreography
Improvisational Exercises
Cool Down / Closer

Each of these curriculum features not only take your education beyond simple rote memorization of movements into a more complex cognitive engagement, but they also emphasize collaboration in the choreographic and creative process. Every performance and production features the work of the STUDENTS, not just a regurgitation of what a teacher has taught and drilled. This emphasizes learning HOW to think and create over simply reproducing and replicating so we can develop young artists who are competent, confident, and skilled collaborators!

Please note that the Ambo Dance Theatre School program is a 10 month program that follows the traditional school year structure (plus the option for a Summer Session). If you are wanting a more flexible, low-commitment option that gives the opportunity to explore many dance styles, check out the Creative Movement program!

Hip Hop Dance is a style of movement characterized by bounces and rocks, executed to Hip Hop music. It has deep historical and social roots in African American culture, having emerged in Black communities living in 1970s New York, as well as other cities around the USA among multiple racial backgrounds. While frequently referred to as a singular dance style, Hip Hop dance is part of a whole culture of Hip Hop, that includes Deejaying, Graffiti, Emceeing, and Breaking.

Modern

Modern Dance is the core dance style of the Ambo Dance Theatre Company! Started as a rebellion against the rigid theatrical and performative norms of  ballet, modern dance explores the use of diverse points throughout the body to initiate movement, placing emphasis on the spine, and the head-tail connection. In this style, you'll find integrations of floor work, contraction and release, fall and recovery, and personal expression of movement within proper alignment.

Tap

Tap dance is a form of dance characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. Two major variations on tap dance exist: rhythm tap and Broadway tap. Broadway tap focuses on dance; it is widely performed in musical theater. Tap is believed to have first originated in the U.S. from African and Irish slaves observing each other's dances on Southern plantations in the 19th century.
